Adult Classes
Sunday Morning Classes, 9:45-10:45 a.m., Sept. 18—Dec. 18
Kergyma
Instructor: Ed Thornton
Participants in this class will undertake a comprehensive review of the Old and New Testaments to gain a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Bible. A workbook is available that serves as a study guide leading the student through sections of the Bible over a period of thirty sessions. Each session involves a brief lecture on assigned passages of scripture followed by participation in a discussion in a study group approach.
The Silver Chair
Facilitators: Donna Hovde & Cliff Wakeman
In The Silver Chair, the fourth book in C. S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series, Jill and Eustace search for the lost prince. Along the way they learn about the importance of friendship, but there are also many deeply theological themes about facing death and being reborn, about the significance of Scripture and the importance of faith. Though this is a children’s book, it is also for everyone wanting to learn more about what it means to follow Christ.
Prayer
Facilitator: John Westleigh
Come and pray. There is no agenda for this class, other than opening with scripture. All attending will then have the opportunity to pray aloud or simply spend time in silent prayer as led by the Holy Spirit.
Egypt, the Exodus and God’s Love Affair with His People in the Desert
Facilitators: Ann Wood & Pastor Kriss
Filmed on location in Egypt and the Sinai Desert with Ray Vanderlaan, scholar and teacher, this DVD study illuminates the historical, geographical and cultural context of the biblical account of the exodus of the enslaved Israelites. Against the backdrop of Egypt’s creation story and Pharoah’s responsibility along with their gods to maintain order, we gain new insight into the Lord’s judgment of the Egyptian gods through the plagues. As we journey through the Sinai Desert, we see God shaping a recalcitrant, but redeemed, people into a community fit for the Promised Land as a light in a dark world. This series will give us a new understanding of God’s power and love and will challenge us to deepen our faith.

Pastor’s Bible Study: Hebrews
Facilitator: Pastor Rob
Have you ever wondered how the Old Testament is fulfilled by the New Testament? Why don’t we sacrifice animals any longer for our atonement? Why is Christ our priest and what does that mean? What are the reasons why Christ is greater than Moses, Adam and the angels? Hebrews addresses these questions and gives us answers. Pick up your study guide from the Information island in the Narthex. This class meets in the West Alcove.

Be More Women's Bible Study
Facilitator: Pastor Kriss
Breaking Free, a Beth Moore DVD study, will lead us through Scripture to discover the transforming power of freedom in Jesus Christ. Themes for this study come from Isaiah, a book about the captivity of God’s children, the faithfulness of God, and the road to freedom. It draws parallels between the captive Israelites of the Old Testament and New Testament believers in Jesus as the Promised Messiah. Materials cost is $20. Childcare will be provided.
Tuesday Evenings, Nov. 8- Dec. 20, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
The Theology of C. S. Lewis
Instructors: Rev. Rob Hagan, T.P. Straatsma & Donna Hovde
C.S. Lewis was an author, a scholar of English literature and a famous Christian apologist. He is known as an author for his fictional works, the most popular of which are The Chronicles of Narnia, seven books for young people which incorporate Christian themes and doctrines allegorically, as well as for books openly written in defense of traditional Christianity. Lewis emphasized orthodox Christian conceptions of sin, redemption, hell, atonement, resurrection and miracles in writings that were focused on the average person, rather than philosophers and theologians. In this course we will highlight different aspects of the theology of C.S. Lewis. Required text for this high-commitment, in-depth course is Will Vaus’ book Mere Theology – A Guide to the Thought of C. S. Lewis. The course will include a mid-term and final exam based on Vaus' text, as well as the material presented in each week's lecture,
