Adult Classes

Sunday Morning Classes,  9:45-10:45 a.m., Jan. 8 - March 11

Kergyma
Instructor: Ed Thornton
Over a period of four quarters this class provides a comprehensive review of the Old and New Testaments, with the goal of gaining a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Bible. Each quarter is self-contained, so students may join us without having attended previous sessions.

In this second quarter of the series the focus is on the Old Testament Prophets and Historical Books. Each session begins with a brief overview and reading of selected scriptures, followed by discussion in a study group format.

Bioethics & Compassion
Facilitators:Jim Cochran
During her visit with us in October as our Memorial Lecturer, Dr. Jennie McLaurin invited us to think more deeply about how we view the ethical debate that swirls around scientific discoveries that both extend and take life.  This course, fashioned after a Christianity Today International Bible Study, is one response to that invitation.

During the term, we anticipate discussing an array of topics ranging from “The Value of Human Life” to “Genetic Testing: How Far is Too Far?” and from “A Christian View of the Disabled” to “The Death Penalty: Right or Wrong?”  Each week our time together begins with discussion about a provocative article that sets the stage. This will be followed by consideration of Scriptural passages that suggest eternal principles relevant to the topic at hand and worthy of thoughtful reflection and application.  Each class is independent of the others, so feel free to join us at any time during the quarter.  However, please come with an open mind, prepared for lively discussion on important topics that have already or will eventually affect each one of us.

Growing In Your Gifts
Facilitator: Shannon Spencer
In this class we will discover how God has built you, and what He's built you for. Together we will:

     1) Explore your spiritual gifts, passions, and talents
     2) Develop a deeper sense of "servant leadership"
     3) Learn how to balance and manage time in your spiritual & personal life.
     4) Recognize the importance of prayer in discovering God's purpose for your life
     5) Uncover how God wants to use your gifts in your church, community, and world.

This class is based on the R.E.A.L. Discipleship method. It is Relational, with lots of sharing and discussion. It is Experiential, filled with fun class experiences culminating in a final group service project. It is Applicable, as you grow and learn to "walk it out" in the rest of your life. It is Learner-Based, as we experience what God has to share with us through His Living Word. Please bring friends to class so they can join in the fun as we Grow in our Gifts together.

Prayer
Facilitators: John Westleigh
Come and pray. There is no agenda for this class, other than opening with scripture. All attending will have the opportunity to pray aloud or simply spend time in silent prayer as led by the Holy Spirit.

Inquirers’ Class
If you are not yet a member of Kennewick First Pres and want to explore that opportunity, the Inquirers’ Class is the place to do it!  This eight-week series of lectures and small group discussions, led by Pastor Rob and his team, will touch on faith, church history, our life support systems, our current ministries at KFPC, and spiritual gifts.  Please mark your calendars, join us and become more active in our First Pres family. For more information, contact Jim Cochran. No text required.

Thursday Mornings  10:00—11:00 am

Pastor’s Bible Study: Ruth
Facilitator:  Pastor Rob
Join us for an enlightening study of the book of Ruth. In the midst of scriptures filled with war and the threat of war, with trickery and treachery among brothers and sisters, with disobedience and unfaithfulness, the book of Ruth has been viewed as an island of tranquility in which people generally act well toward one another and the community celebrates a happy ending for all concerned. This six week study on Ruth will be followed by a study on the book of Acts, which continues into Spring quarter. This class meets in the West Alcove.

Monday Evenings,  6:30 –8:30 pm  OR  Wednesday Mornings,  9:30 –11:30 am

Tuesday Evenings, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

The Last Things
Instructors:  Rev. Rob Hagan, T.P. Straatsma
This course addresses the difficult and sometimes controversial themes of eschatology: the end of history, the coming of the kingdom of God, the second coming of Jesus Christ, resurrection and final judgment, heaven and hell. Using Dubuque Theological Seminary Emeritus Professor of Theology Donald G. Bloesch’s book “The Last Things – Resurrection, Judgment, Glory” as our text, we will follow distinctly evangelical theological principles of bringing all of the biblical parameters to bear on these difficult topics. The course includes a midterm and final exam based on both the text and weekly lecture material.

Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Pastor Rob's Thursday Bible Study is studying  the book of Acts. The study meets in the West Alcove in First Pres Center.
