Discipleship Groups

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? While many people will easily call themselves a "Christian," they will be more reluctant to call themselves a "disciple." Being a Christian is fairly easy, the only thing required is to acknowledge our need of a savior and to receive the gift of Jesus that we cannot earn nor do we deserve. But if we call ourselves disciples, then we make a statement about the quality of our followership of Jesus. Being a Christian is a statement about what Jesus has done for us; being a disciple is a statement about what we are doing for Jesus.

Discipleship Groups focus on four basic things that a disciple of Jesus needs in order to grow, including:

1) practicing spiritual disciplines such as regular Bible study, prayer, and worship;

2) understanding the message of Jesus including the Trinity, sin, grace, redemption, justification, and adoption into God's family;

3) working to become more like Jesus including being filled with the Holy Spirit, practicing the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control), and understanding the concepts of trust, love, justice and witness; and

4) learning how to serve Jesus including serving in the church, using our gifts to help others, being obedient to God, and sharing what we have.

Discipleship Groups are made up of 2-4 people who meet weekly, and who work through a focused discipleship training study. Currently some of our discipleship groups use
Discipleship Essentials by Greg Ogden. Typically one of the group members has completed the study and guides the group, and all members sign a covenant promising to complete all assignments before meeting, meet regularly, be open and honest, and maintain confidentiality. Members also commit to leading a new discipleship group after they are finished the study.
